Leland Public School is centered on providing an outstanding, world class educational program for all of our 450 students.  On the average, over 90% of our graduating seniors have fully endorsed diplomas and over 80% earn the Michigan Merit Exam based scholarship.  Our ACT scores are consistently two to five points above state and national averages for students taking college preparatory coursework.

Over the years, Leland Public School has received recognition on both the state and national level for our academic track record.  The School Evaluation report by Standard and Poor’s used terms such as, “well above” and “exceptionally above” to describe the district’s overall testing performance.  The web site, School Matters (www.schoolmatters.com), recently listed only one high school in Michigan in which student scores were higher than Leland High School’s four year average for MEAP math performance.  This same website listed 10 high schools in Michigan which scored as well or higher on a four year average in MEAP readings.  These lists included data from every high school in the State of Michigan, regardless of the size.

In 2006, Leland Public School was named one of 43 “outperforming school districts” in Michigan.  To be identified as an “out performer,” schools had to report significantly higher percentages of students that scored proficient or above on state reading and math tests than districts with similar levels of economically-disadvantaged students over the course of two years.

“U.S. News and World Report” awarded Leland High School a bronze award as one of its “America’s Best High Schools” in the November 2007 issue.  The designation is based on the key principle that a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are bound for college, and that it be able to produce measurable outcomes that show the school is successfully educating students across a range of performance indicators.

While academics are our main focus, we also firmly believe that a well rounded education is an essential element of a quality educational experience.  Toward that end, we offer art, music, and physical education K-12.  We sponsor many co-curricular opportunities such as plays, Youth in Government, and Odyssey of the Mind.  A full slate of athletic opportunities is also available.  Our athletic teams and O.M. teams have won many state championships over the years.

Finally, we strive to keep our technology package as close to the cutting edge as possible.  Our students can access technology on demand.  The philosophy of the staff is that technology is one tool of many and must be available when it is needed for learning.
