The Solid Waste Council is appointed by the County Board of Commissioners. They assist with the implementation and updating of the Leelanau County Solid Waste Management Plan and the Leelanau County Solid Waste Ordinance. They also identify concerns and provide recommendations to the Board of Commissioners on solid waste and recycling issues.

The Solid Waste Council meets the first Tuesday, quarterly at the Government Center in Suttons Bay. Special meetings are called as necessary and posted in the Leelanau Enterprise.
